Established since 1979 on the grounds of the Château de la Mhotte in Saint-Menoux in the Allier region, the École de la Mhotte is an independent school based on the Steiner-Waldorf pedagogy, catering for around 120 children from kindergarten to the end of secondary school. With tuition fees generating a budget per pupil three times lower than the average expenditure per pupil in public education, the school's good health relies just as much on voluntary work and donations. For example, there are numerous parent participation projects and the school's parent workshops, some of which have been producing student notebooks for over 30 years. These are also sold to other Waldorf schools in France, beeswax candles sold at the school's markets and elsewhere in France and Switzerland, and seasonal creations in quilted wool.
